Remove XREF Path in AutoCAD

by Jim
(Melbourne, Australia)

I'm not sure why some firms add an XREF path to their drawings, when they know the drawings will be sent to another firm, but it'S driving me crazy.

I have about 16 drawings I received from an engineering firm and I need to remove the XREF path to show no path.

We're using AutoCAD 2011 and I'm not sure where in the XREF dialog box I am supposed to edit the path.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Great AutoCAD Q&A by the way!

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Remove External Reference Path
by: Joseph

Hey Jim,

Yep, that can be frustrating, although I'll bet some of these firms have their own reasons for specifying an External Reference path.

I think if they used the Etransmit command before sending you the drawings, they could strip the XREF paths off.

But since you already have them, open the XREF dialog box by typing XREF.

At the bottom of the box, under DETAILS, where it says FOUND AT, simply highlight the portion of the path BEFORE the file names, then hit delete.

Be sure to leave the XREF name itself in tack.

Then hit ENTER and poof the XREF path is gone.
