I am working on a 2005 trial version of AutoCAD and cannot figure out how to create (draw) a filled object. I know how to turn on/off the filled display, but how do I fill in the first place?

Most basic AutoCAD questions can be answered by looking through the AutoCAD Help section, so you may want to look there first if you are not sure how to draw an object in AutoCAD.
But if you are looking to FILL an object that you have already drawn, I like to use the HATCH command and set the pattern to "solid".
Just make sure the object you have drawn, has no gaps between the endpoints before running the HATCH command.
In other words make sure all the endpoints meet, and you can ensure this by drawing with your OSNAP settings on.
