x-ref (attachment vs overlay?)

by Patty Belhumeur

What is the difference attachement and an overlay?

How do they affect the x-ref?

If updating an x-ref what is the outcome for the attachment verses the overlay?

Thank you so much for you help.

attach vs. overlay
by: j.hebert

Attached files will be referenced with the file they were inserted to, when that file is referenced into another drawing file.

An overlaid file will not.

Say that you have a building background that you need as reference, and 3 other types of "models" that will be attached to the final system layout, but you dont want the background referenced multiple times in the final drawing.

I would "overlay" the file in the electrical drawing and in the floor support drawing, but "attach" it in the basic component drawing...then when you reference these drawings into your final system layout drawing you should show only one attachment of the background.

Hope that helps. .j.
